In 2016, in a unique programme covering several universities of north India, MILAP
in partnership with Jamia Millia Islamia trained 900 students as master trainers on
Interfaith and Coexistence from different universities across several cities including
Delhi, Punjab University, Patiala (Punjab), Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh (UP),
Maulana Azad University, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Al Falah College of Engineering,
Dhauj (Haryana). They were designated as Ambassadors of Peace to take the mission
forward.
Participating students were selected by Jamia through a process of self-/peer-
nomination and final selection done after a brief interview, to assess the students
motivation and aspiration on why they wanted to be part of this initiative and how
they planned to provide sustainability to this project.
Religious scholars from different religions educated the students about their religions
and also made a comparative study of different religions and in the end tried to find
out a common ground amongst them, the students trained in these principles were
encouraged to take these ideas or insights forward amongst the rest of the student
fraternity of their college/university.
The students were taught the theoretical aspects of different religions, focusing on the
common ground amongst them by the religious leaders, this was more theoretical part
of the workshop, with hand-outs or reading materials being given to them, secondly,
the participants were trained by a soft skills trainer on how to convey these messages
in a coherent and effective manner to the rest of the student community, by organising
small meetings/workshops in their institutions in the next 12 months.
